Purgatory

Maybe this happens with others as well...like certain foods that my body needs nutrients from, I crave certain books or movies at times of dislocation.

This week's craving is "Finding Forrester," which I own but don't have time to watch until the weekend. I know why I am craving it. If you haven't seen the movie, the protagonist is an African-American youth from the rough side of New York City who is actually a brilliant writer and literary scholar. Thing is, he doesn't feel brilliant enough to succeed with the other brilliant people, who are mostly white, and he keeps his gifts from his friends and family, who don't understand writing and literature.

And then he finds Forrester, who, in a tough way, nurtures the writing in the youth.

Squarely lodged in my own Harlem while knowing better and knowing less, I stumble on glimpses of Forresters and hope.
