Therapy

Some books, when coupled with events in our lives, help the healing process…

“Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert is satisfying food for the soul, and guidance as well. My plan for this book is to read it as a daily devotional, as a reminder, even though the book is a memoir and not a self-help text or collection of meditations.

Between this book and my recent decision to see a therapist, I have been able to make some difficult but healthy decisions about my life in terms of partners and career, and, above all, have learned more and more to TRUST MY OWN JUDGMENT. I know that I don’t do that enough, and this woman’s life and writing sets the example to think back to times when my judgment was correct but I listened to others and made things worse. This book isn’t a lecture or sermon—she leads and falls and leads again purely by example. In a City full of the jaded, this book is invaluable to me for embracing pleasure on even the smallest scale, or in taking the most basic steps to center myself.

I have many more thoughts on this book, and will drop them into my blog and other writings from time to time. If you crave travel, language, food, prayer, stillness—and most of all discovery—this book is a must-read.
