Moons and Junes and Ferris Wheels


Reading Larson's "The Devil in the White City" right now, and learning the most amazing things...for instance, like this big guy on the left...


This is a picture of the first Ferris Wheel, taken in 1893 at the Columbia Exposition (the first World's Fair) in Chicago. What I loved most about this story was that THIS structure was the United States' architectual answer to the Eiffel Tower.


Wonder what it says to the fact that there are hundreds of Ferris wheels around the world and only one Eiffel Tower...

Something else that I liked about this contraption...the original Ferris Wheel was about ten times bigger than they build them today, and each car could hold 60 people. Today's model is smaller and holds two people per car.


You would think we would carry this approach over to SUV manufacturing, but I digress...


Ah, what dreams may come.
